JAIPUR toURISM

Jaipur,
the capital city of the state of Rajasthan is properly known as the 'pink city'
because of the paint applied to the buildings to the buildings in its old walled
city. (In Rajput culture, pink color is associated with hospitality). Jaipur has
broad avenues & a remarkable harmony. There are impressive monuments, an excellent
range of handicrafts, a wide range of cuisine, and entertainment that can keep
you enthralled for days. In fact, you will find yourself wanting to extend your
holiday.
Amber Fort : About 11km away from the Jaipur city on
the Delhi to Jaipur road, Amber was once the ancient capital of the Jaipur state.
The fort has a fascinating blend of Rajput & Mughal architecture, this red
sandstone & white marble palace has some very interesting apartments, the
likes of which are not to be found anywhere in the country. Diwan-I-Aam, Ganesh
Pol, Sheesh Mahal, Jai Mandir, Palace of 0Mansingh & Shila Devi temple are
some of the places you should not miss.
City
Palace : In the heart of the old city, the City Palace occupies a large area
divided into a series of courtyards, gardens & buildings. today, the palace
is a blend of Rajasthani & Moghul architecture. A part of which remains the
residence of the Jaipur family is definitely worth a visit. Several gateways lead
from the crowded streets into the palace, but the museum entrance is recommended.
Jantar Mantar : Adjacent to the City Palace is the Jantar Mantar,
or observatory, begun by Jai Singh's passion for astronomy was even more notable
than his prowess as a warrior &, before commencing construction, he sent scholars
abroad to study foreign observatories.
At first glance, Jantar Manta
appears to be just a curious collection of sculptures but, in fact each construction
has a specific purpose, such as measuring the positions of stars, altitude &
azimuths, or calculating eclipses. The most striking instrument is the sundial
with its 30 meter high gnomon. The shadow this casts moves up to four meter an
hour.
Central Museum : The museum is housed in the architecturally
impressive Albert Hall in the Ram Niwas Garden, south of the old city. The upper
floor contains portraits of the Jaipur maharajas & many other miniatures &
artworks. The ground floor has a collection of costumes & woodwork from different
parts of Rajasthan & a description of the people & life in the rural areas
of the state.
Hawa
Mahal : Built in 1799, the Hawa Mahal, or Palace of Winds, is one of Jaipur's
major landmarks although it is actually little more than a facade. This five story
building which looks out over the main street of the old city, is a stunning example
of Rajput artistry with its pink, semi octagonal& sandstone windows. You can
climb to the top of the Hawa Mahal for an excellent view over the city.
Jaigarh Fort : The imposing Jaigarh Fort, built in 1726 by Jai Singh, was
only opened to the public in mid 1983. It's within distance of Amber & offers
a great view over the plains from the Diwa Burj watchtower. The fort, with its
water reservoirs, residential areas, puppet theatre & the cannon, Jaya Vana,
is open from 9am to 4.30pm.
Nargarh Fort : The Nahargarh Fort
overlooks the city from a sheer ridge 6.5km away, & is floodlit at night.
The road from amber through the hills can be traveled by jeep or by rickshaw,
but the peak is at the end 1.5km of zigzag path. The fort was built in 1734 &
extended in 1868.
