The word Gangaur is derived from two words Gan synonymous with Siva and Gauri from his consort Parvati. The festival starts the day after the Holi and lasts approximately 2 weeks (16 Days). The festival is celebrated in honor of Gauri who is considered as the symbol of virtue and fidelity and a mythological model of married women. While worshiping Gauri married women for the welfare of her husband, worship the young single women by being blessed with a spouse of their choice.
